THURSDAY, MERLIMAU ‚Äď An Inter-Polytechnic Parlimentary debate was held in Politeknik Merlimau from 30th January till 2nd February 2012. 28 teams¬† from 11 Polytechnics namely Politeknik Merlimau, Politeknik Melaka,¬† Politeknik Ungku Omar,¬† Politeknik Port Dickscon, Politeknik Sultan Azlan Shah, Politeknik Sultanah Tengku Ba‚Äôyah, Politeknik Sultan Idris Shah, Politeknik Johor Bahru,¬† Politeknik Muadzam Shah, Politeknik Perlis and¬† Politeknik Seberang Perai.

As  many participants were not familiar with the rules of the Parlimentary Debate, this was a learning experience for them A briefing and demonstration on how the debate should be carried out, was conducted by Encik Yunus a consultant and experience parliamentary and a group of UiTM students, before the participants were divided into 4 teams comprising of the opening government, closing government, opening opposition and closing opposition.

There were 5 preliminary rounds with 16 teams going to the quarter finals and 8 teams to the semi final. The final 4 teams fought it out in the final in the presence of the Director General.
The adjudicators appointed were experts Mr Yunus , Mr Moses Smith and lecturers from the different Polytechnics. Polytechnic Melaka sent two teams of 4 Semester 3 students from Diploma in International Business Studies namely Margaret Andrew, Mohamad Haziq, Najmuddin Azik and Nuranisa Norzahan. Margaret and Najmuddin made it to the quarter finals whereas N uranisa and Haziq managed to make it into the semi finals. They met the teams from Polytechnic Ungko Omar, Polytechnic Merlimau respectively. Although we did not get into the finals, we were very proud of our students  for doing a great job in debating for the first time.

It was a challenging yet learning experience for all, as debating requires language and critical thinking skills, argumentative skills and students to be able to think on the spot. Furthermore, the debate allowed the students to be independent, competitive yet able to work with their peers  to achieve success as a team.  PMK hopes to take part in more debate workshops and competitions to enhance not only communicative skills but also develop future leadership.
